NDEB PATHWAYS

What is the NDEB?

For internationally trained dentists aspiring to practice in Canada, the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) conducts exams to assess both clinical skills and theoretical knowledge. The goal is to ensure candidates meet Canadian standards for safe and effective dental practice.

Step 1: Application & Credential Verification

Apply through the NDEB Connect portal, upload your documents (diploma, transcripts, ID, letters of good standing) and pay fees. Verification takes 10–22 weeks. Once approved, you can register for the first exam.

Step 2: Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge (AFK)

200 multiple-choice questions testing dental theory. Passing score: 75+. Offered twice yearly (Feb & Aug). Most candidates prepare 4–6 months with structured study plans and mock tests.

Step 3: Assessment of Clinical Judgment (ACJ)

Case-based questions evaluating clinical decisions and radiograph interpretation. Passing score: 75+. Conducted twice yearly (May & Nov).

Step 4: National Dental Examination of Clinical Competence (NDECCâ„¢) + SJ

Assesses clinical skills (restorations, endo, crowns, infection control) and situational judgment. Conducted at Ottawa Test Centre, year-round with multiple weekly sessions.

Step 5: Final Certification – Written Board & OSCE

Written exam + OSCE (station-based practical). Passing both earns the official NDEB Certificate.

Final Step: Provincial Licensure

With your NDEB Certificate, apply to the provincial/territorial dental authority. Additional requirements may vary by region.
